Parenting Equations
Jun 21
Lately I’ve been reading Daddy Dates by Greg Wright. Early on he gives an equation that describe the balance between rules and relationships in parenting.
- Rules – Relationship = Rebellion
- Relationship – Rules = Destruction
- Relationship + Rules = Connection
Greg states,
It’s like hanging on to a bar of wet soap in the shower. If you hold the bar too closely, it will fall; if you grip too tightly, it pops out the top. Parenting with all rules and no relationship is a strategy based on fear, and it doesn’t work. You grip so hard that you actually loose control. …It is equally ineffective to be loosey-goosey, more of a permissive pas than a productive parent. it will tear the relationship apart and put a kid in real danger.
He gives another really good equation that can be applied to all human relationships.
Talk + Action + Time = Trust
How have seen or practiced a balance rules and relationship in parenting?
